Abstract

Formation for Christian proclaimers is an integral process that develops not only theological knowledge and pastoral skills but also character increasingly shaped by the Gospel. This study develops and conducts a limited field trial of the Reflective Instrument for the Formation of Proclaimers Based on the Fruit of the Spirit (IRFP-BR), grounded in Galatians 5:22–23. A limited research and development (R&D) design was used, including literature analysis, biblical-theological synthesis, formulation of nine dimensions, development and simplification of the instrument into 18 reflective-scale items and two essay questions, and a limited field trial. Twenty-five participants from several groups with ministry experience were purposively recruited. Quantitative responses were analyzed descriptively, while essays were examined through thematic coding. The overall mean across the 18 items was 4.14 on a five-point scale, and 84.2% of 450 responses fell in categories 4–5. Joy showed the highest relative mean (4.40), followed by faithfulness (4.24) and gentleness (4.20). Narrative data, however, revealed complexities not fully captured by scores: patience and self-control were each identified by 11 of 25 participants (44%) as areas of struggle. Character-change narratives particularly emphasized patience/emotional regulation, openness and listening, and humility/self-awareness. The findings support the use of formation assessment as reflective, dialogical, and formative rather than as a diagnosis of spirituality. IRFP-BR may help connect spiritual experience, character dispositions, and ministry practice, while further expert validation and broader testing remain necessary.
