Abstract

The expansion of the platform economy has transformed the organization of work, income generation, and economic relations. In Indonesia, this transformation is particularly visible in app-based transportation and delivery services. Platform work creates new opportunities through flexibility, market access, and technological efficiency, yet it also raises questions concerning income insecurity, social protection, algorithmic management, rating systems, and asymmetrical relations between platforms and workers. This article examines these issues from the perspective of human dignity in Catholic theology and explores their implications for contextual catechesis. Using a qualitative literature-based approach and contextual theological reflection, the study places three studies on Indonesian platform labour—Bronwyn Frey, Joanna Octavia, and Arif Novianto—in dialogue with Stephen B. Bevans’s contextual theology, Adrianus Sunarko’s reflection on theology in the Indonesian context, public theology associated with F. X. E. Armada Riyanto, and Catholic social teaching. The three empirical studies form a coherent analytical trajectory from informality and worker organization, through algorithmic management, to gamification, precarity, and worker resistance. The article argues that the central theological issue is not technology itself, but the risk of reducing persons to data, ratings, targets, and units of productivity. Its contribution lies in integrating Indonesian platform-work studies, theological anthropology of human dignity, contextual theology, and catechetical praxis. It proposes a contextual-transformative catechetical model that moves from lived experience to faith reflection, critical discernment, and transformative action, so that digital economic systems are evaluated according to their service to the integral dignity of the human person.
